About Ryan D. Stys

With extensive experience as a trial attorney, Ryan has successfully tried dozens of cases in state and federal courts. Ryan currently focuses on civil rights cases in defense of individuals across a broad spectrum of matters, including U.S. Constitutional and state-law claims.
Ryan began his career on active duty as an officer and Judge Advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps. While on active duty, Ryan served as a prosecutor and command legal advisor. As a prosecutor, Ryan prosecuted numerous contested jury trials spanning a wide range of crimes including sexual assault, drug distribution, larceny, and various financial crimes. Ryan also served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California. As a command legal advisor, Ryan provided pre-deployment training and instruction to multiple U.S. Marine Corps commands on various legal issues related to the law of armed conflict.
Ryan was later appointed as a Special Assistant Attorney General where he served as a criminal prosecutor in the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General. As a state prosecutor, Ryan prosecuted major felony cases involving homicide, robbery, child molestation, possession and production of child pornography, public corruption, and complex financial and internet crimes.
Ryan continues to serve in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves. He is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School, Command and Staff College, and the Joint and Combined Warfighting School. He serves in various roles and billets, deploying worldwide in support of U.S. missions and exercises.
